ANM-0 — Ambient Navigation Model
Navigation in Ambient OS is not agentic movement, task execution, or map-based selection. Navigation is the thermodynamic residue of incomplete field stabilisation.
1. The Core Insight
Navigation does not begin with choosing a direction.
Navigation begins when a field fails to stabilise.
Where the smartphone required intent, mapping, and goal selection, Ambient OS obeys thermodynamic law:
Movement arises because stabilisation failed, not because choice succeeded.
2. Behaviour and Navigation as Distinct Outcomes
When a field stabilises:
- Blue → clarity, notes, schedules
- Pink → social resonance
- Green → bodily recovery
- Purple → infrastructure comprehension
When a field fails to stabilise:
Yellow appears — the ignition of unresolved attention — and navigation begins as thermodynamic drift toward a new attractor.

4. Thermodynamic Formulation
Let S = stability potential of a field.
If S ≥ threshold → behaviour emerges. If S < threshold → navigation emerges.
Navigation = Residue = (Threshold - S)ᵀ Where T denotes local thermodynamic pressure (not time).
Navigation is thus a pressure release mechanism within the attractor ecology.
5. Human Experience
In a university attractor:
- Blue attempts to stabilise → clarity, pathfinding, schedules
- Yellow flickers when Blue is insufficient
- Navigation emerges as drift toward a nearby Blue-stable zone
You do not choose the route.
The route reveals where stabilisation can complete.
